Three-star ATH Barfield becomes first San Diego State commit

San Diego State received its first commitment of the 2018 recruiting class on Saturday, kicking off what is expected to be one of the strongest starts to SDSU's football recruiting in several years.

This year's potential group of early Aztec commits is shaping up to be one of the most athletically gifted in recent years. So, fittingly, the staff started off hot by bringing in one of the best athletes in west Texas.

El Paso (Tex.) El Dorado high school athlete Cedarious Barefield (5-11, 175) announced his commitment to the Aztecs via Twitter, posting images from his recent summer visit.

Barefield racked up major stats during his junior year and clearly has a nose for the end zone, so schools such as Air force, Army, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Southern Miss, UTEP made sure to offer.

But SDSU and recruiting coordinator Tony White ended up securing his talent, and have plans to develop him on the defensive side of the ball.

“Coach White likes me as a corner because he sees similarities to [Damontae] Kazee, the one who had a bunch of interceptions playing for them,” said Barfield during a previous conversation with ASR. “Coach White is a pretty cool guy and he came from El Paso so we have that connection. He’s an awesome guy to talk to and to ask questions about anything.

“It felt great when he offered because I talked about San Diego State with my parents and we thought it looked like a really nice school. We saw photos and read up about how they won back to back conference championships so it was really cool. They also have my major (psychology) which is good.”

Barefield was recruited by some schools as a triple-option quarterback but he’ll likely end up playing in the slot or as a defensive back in college.
