Ventura (Calif.) C.C. quarterback Brad Odeman committed to San Diego State following an official visit on Sunday evening. The sophomore quarterback said the plan is to sign his letter of intent on Wednesday and enroll in school during the spring semester.

"Coach (Brian) Sipe just called me up and offered me, I'm officially an Aztec," Odeman said. "The whole time I was just smiling. I'm so blessed and really thankful that they would want me to come down there and play for them. I've been dreaming for this day for a while, I always wanted to play Division I football so I couldn't be happier. I'm looking forward to it, man. I'm really excited."

Odeman grew up in Napa, Calif. before moving to Wisconsin at the age of eight. He went to high school at Appleton (WI.) North and played quarterback for a predominantly run-first offense, scaring away programs interested in recruiting him at even the Div. II level.

"We were a powerhouse running team so I didn't really get to show off my arm at all," he said. "I didn't have any film to prove myself."

Odeman ended up making his way down to Ventura C.C. where he had a relative living in the area. His freshman season, Odeman had a bum elbow and couldn't play QB. So, instead, he had a minimal H-back / tight end role on the team. During his sophomore year, he felt good about his elbow and decided to give quarterback another shot.

Good call.

Odeman threw for 3,293 yards and 28 touchdowns during the season; he finally had some game film to show for.

So he put together a couple highlight clips on tape, sent it out to SDSU quarterbacks coach Brian Sipe and got a surprising response.

"Like half an hour later, he responded back and said he really liked what he saw and talked with my coach," Odeman said. "It was pretty crazy."

Sipe then began the process of setting up an official visit for Odeman this weekend, but there was one problem: Odeman had previously scheduled a visit to Northern Colorado which would conflict with the trip.

"I just felt that it was the right thing for me to go to San Diego State instead with how the whole email thing happened," Odeman said. "I had this weird feeling."

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound QB enjoyed the visit enough to commit on the spot, and now he will be coming into SDSU's spring camp competing for a starting job against Quinn Kaehler, Adam Dingwell, Chase Favreau and freshman early enrollee Nick Bawden.

"It's going to be a good competition," Odeman said. "But I'm just coming in with the mindset of working my butt off in the weight room, earning the respect of the guys first and just doing my best out on the football field. I'm going to go out there and show what I got and hopefully my best is the best and I'll be able to be the starter. But that's obviously every quarterback's goal, or at least it should be otherwise I don't think you should be back there, but I'm going to do everything I can to be in the best situation possible. It's going to be a competition, it's going to be a good battle and I'm ready for it. I'm ready for the ride."

Odeman chose San Diego State over offers from Northern Colorado and Charleston while also receiving strong interest from programs such as San Jose State, Toledo, UNLV and Utah State. He said he will not be considering any potential offers moving forward and is set on signing with San Diego State.

"I feel right about being here and the whole vibe between Coach Sipe and I," Odeman said. "I'm a pretty religious guy so I believe God set this up for me. And just to be able to learn under Coach Sipe - him having a lot of NFL experience - is just really cool for me. He has a ton of knowledge so being able to pick his brain is going to be pretty awesome. He was a big factor in this whole thing."
