SDSU flips Salazar from Fresno State

San Diego State received a surprise signing from San Diego (Ca.) Rancho Bernardo quarterback Mark Salazar on Wednesday morning.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder flipped his verbal pledge from Fresno State and sent in his letter of intent to SDSU.

The Aztecs were in desperate need of a second QB after being spurned by a local commit in 2016. The depth chart contained only two scholarship quarterbacks heading into the summer - Christian Chapman and Ryan Agnew - so a second signing was bound to happen at some point.

Texas QB Cam Roane committed to the Aztecs last fall and he was one of the first prospects announced by the school on signing day.

Despite Roane's commitment, Salazar saw the overall depth chart as an opportunity to compete for early playing time and made the decision to join the class days before signing day.

"Until yesterday, I was fully committed to Fresno State," Salazar wrote on Twitter, going on to give thanks to the Bulldogs' former coaching staff and head coach Jeff Tedford's new staff which honored his scholarship after the coaching change. "I was one of the two commits who were kept. I appreciate your investment in me as a staff, and the time that was taken to come see me and my family...

"My family and I have had long discussions over the past few days, and we have concluded that San Diego State is an overall better decision for me. I'm honored to say that I will be joining the Aztecs this fall."

Salazar suffered an injury during his senior year but his film shows fantastic deep ball skills, escapability in the pocket and the ability to throw accurately on the run.
