After reports indicated as such, Wednesday the Aztecs made the word official. Sean Lewis is taking over the San Diego State football program as its 19th head coach after a one-season stint at Colorado as its offensive coordinator.

Lewis comes to The Mesa with head coaching experience, however. He was previously the youngest head coach at the FBS level when he was hired by Kent State at just 31 years old in 2017.

While with the Golden Flashes, he built one of the most productive offenses in the country and will now come to SDSU hoping to reverse the fortunes on that side of the ball. The Aztecs struggled offensively and looked to take the program in a new direction because of it after the decision by Brady Hoke to retire within recent weeks.

Lewis will now be tasked with turning around a team that finished the season with a 4-8 record.

"San Diego State University, my family and I can't express how excited we are to be joining this incredible community," Lewis said in a statement announcing the news Wednesday morning. "We are looking forward to partnering with all of you in serving and leading our amazing football program. The time is now to support and make Snapdragon Stadium the place to be for Fast, Physical, Fun Aztec Football."

Under Hoke, the Aztecs have built their identity around the defense, but the offense mostly struggled over that time.

This season, SDSU ranks among the worst in the nation in total offense (107th), scoring (11th) and passing offense (116th).

Though his time with the Buffaloes was short lived, Lewis made an impact while in Boulder helping guide quarterback Shedeur Sanders to a top-10 finish in the regular season in pass yards per game (293.6). Colorado ended the regular season with the 15th-best passing offense in the FBS.

"I am thrilled to welcome Sean Lewis and his family to San Diego State University," SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said. "He is a coach with immense talent and I'm looking forward to the excitement that his teams are going to generate at Snapdragon Stadium. His approach emphasizing academic and life skills opportunities are equally important and will complement the student-athlete experience."

Lewis holds a 24-31 record as a head coach and enters the next stage of his career at just 37 years old.
