According to multiple sources around the program, head coach Rocky Long is expected to add local high school head coaching standout Richard Sanchez to join his staff as a defensive backs assistant. Sanchez has been hired by SDSU despite recently meeting with multiple Power 5 coaching staffs this past week at the AFCA Coaches Convention held in North Carolina.
He has informed his players and students at Saint Augustine high.
Sanchez has led the highly regarded Saints program since 2009 with a 83-29 record during an nine-year span. He has won two CIF San Diego Section Championships and three runner-up finishes during the last five seasons. Sanchez attended Sweetwater high school and played wide receiver at New Mexico State before joining SDSU's staff as a grad assistant and earning a Master's Degree in Exercise and Nutrition.
Since then, he has worked at Sacramento State University, Valparaiso, and San Diego coaching special teams, running backs, tight ends, and the offensive line.
He is a big name locally and has vouched for many players that have been pursued by SDSU, most recently freshman starting safety Tariq Thompson and incoming freshmen WR JR Justice and LB Andrew Alves.
