Brady Hoke will not return to the sideline next season. The San Diego State head coach announced his plan to retire from his position leading the Aztecs effective at the end of the regular season. SDSU has only won three games in the fourth season of Hoke's second sting leading the program that includes losses to five of the team's six Mountain West opponents this season.

The Aztecs are just 3-7 on the season with games against San Jose State and Fresno State remaining on the schedule.

Hoke has had two stints at SDSU, first in 2009-10 and again from 2020-23, and he will end his time on the Mesa with a winning record as he currently sits at 39-31 as the program's head coach.

"I am proud of what we accomplished at San Diego State," Hoke said in a statement provided by the program Monday morning announcing the news. "I am grateful to all the great student-athletes I've had the chance to work with, molding them into men, husbands, fathers and pillars in the community. I will always cherish my time leading this program. I'd also like to thank the wonderful staff I've worked with and wish them the best in the future."

Hoke will not end his career with the Aztecs on a high note as the team has struggled this season in a variety of ways. After jumping out to a 2-0 start with victories over Ohio and Idaho State, the Aztecs hit a rough patch beginning with a 35-10 loss to UCLA.

SDSU lost to Oregon State in the final game on nonconference play before opening up its Mountain West schedule with losses to Boise State (34-31) and Air Force (49-10).

The Aztecs' last win came on the road at Hawaii back on Oct. 14, a 41-34 victory. However, SDSU had arguably its worst result of the season the following week when it was shut out by Nevada, 6-0.

San Diego State's offense has struggled this season and is currently ranked 109th out of 130 FBS teams in total offense with an average of 319.7 yards per game this year. The Aztecs rank 113th in scoring offense with an average of just 20 points through 10 games.

The SDSU defense, which finished No. 12 at the end of the 2021 season, now sits at 110th among all FBS teams after allowing an average of 418.7 yards per game through 10 weeks.

The most recent stint at SDSU has not been all bad for Hoke. He guided the team to a program-record 12 wins in that 2021 season that ended with a victory over No. 24 UTSA in the Frisco Bowl and a top-25 ranking for the Aztecs.

"I am very appreciative for the work Brady Hoke has done with our football program at San Diego State both on and off the field," SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said in a statement. "Brady set the standard in 2009 when he first arrived on The Mesa that we now hold ourselves too. However, it's more than wins and losses. Brady created a culture, led our program thru COVID, played two entire seasons in Carson, including a 12-win campaign, and takes seriously the development of young men off the field as well as on. I wish Kelly, Laura and Brady a happy retirement!"

Hoke earned the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year award in 2011 while at Michigan and was named conference coach of the year on four different occasions at his various stops that also included a stint as his alma mater, Ball State, from 2003-08.

The longtime coach's final game at Snapdragon Stadium will take place Nov. 25 against Fresno State with a kickoff time yet to be announced.
