Oregon QB transfer Jake Rodrigues signs with SDSU

Oregon transfer quarterback Jake Rodrigues intends to transfer to San Diego State this summer, AztecSportsReport.com has learned. The former four-star QB out of Rocklin (Calif.) Whitney high school began his official visit to SDSU on Thursday and made his final decision during dinner with the coaching staff on Friday evening. He filled out all of the necessary paperwork and, according to sources, was approved by San Diego State's compliance department midday Saturday.

After Rordrigues asked for his release from Oregon earlier this month, programs such as Miami, Michigan, Texas and Utah State were also in consideration at one point or another, but Rodrigues told ASR on Wednesday that he was down to UT and San Diego State.

"I'm just looking for a place with a senior quarterback graduating next year and a place where the coaches believe in me," Rodrigues said at the time. "The player-coach relationship is the most important thing. They're like your family away from home and that's very important.

"I'm also coming from, by far, the best facilities in the world football-wise (Oregon), but I don't really care about that stuff. I know that wherever I go, it probably isn't going to get better than this, but it's something that isn't important to me. I don't really care about it. As long as there is a weight room that I can work out in and a set of pads for me to play football, it doesn't really matter."

An official visit to Austin, Texas was potentially set to happen as soon as next week, but the 6-foot-3, 215-pound signal caller is done with the recruiting process and locked into SDSU.

Former San Diego State offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig recruited Rodrigues out of high school - along with schools such as Nebraska and more than half of the Pac-12 - but now that Ludwig is currently at Wisconsin, Aztecs quarterback coach Brian Sipe and director of player personnel Kevin McGarry led his recruitment this time around.

"Coach (Sipe) talked about me just making plays and leading the team, putting our players in the right situation, being a leader, throwing the ball in the right place and being accurate," Rodrigues said. "I've also been blessed with athleticism in my feet so I can run if I have to.

"They're really excited, I'm really excited and I can't wait to see what comes of this."

Due to NCAA transfer rules, Rodrigues will not be eligible to play until the 2015 season. He can officially enroll at SDSU once he completes his current courses by the end of this quarter at Oregon (which will finish up in June), but he will be limited to working out and practicing with the Aztecs when he reports to campus in July.

"I'll be sitting out my first year there but I'm going to practice and prepare as if I'm playing," he said. "If I didn't do that, I'd be selling myself short. I hope the (current) guys on the team will see how hard I work and what this team means to me. It's very important to me."
