Aztecs add Z

Phoenix (Ariz.) South Mountain forward Zylan Cheatham announced his commitment to San Diego State on Saturday evening. The four-star prospect picked the Aztecs over Washington and New Mexico.

"I was looking a lot of ways," Cheatham said. "I've always liked Steve Fisher and San Diego State. It's nice down there. We got some great players so I think we're going to shock the world."

After taking an official visit to UNM this past weekend, the Lobos were thought to be the easy favorites to land Cheatham's verbal pledge. But San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher and the rest of his staff met with Cheatham on Tuesday night and swayed him back in their direction.

Cheatham, who is the No. 73-ranked player in the nation according to Rivals, joins five-star forward Malik Pope, Rivals150 shooting guard Trey Kell and three-star point guard Kevin Zabo in San Diego State's 2014 recruiting class.

It's arguably the most impressive group of prospects the program has ever hauled in.

"There was a lot of controversy after Malik Pope committed," Cheatham said. "I didn't pay too much attention to it. I feel like we're going to play together and we're going to do well."
