St. Petersburg (Fla.) Lakewood product Dante Fowler Jr. is one of the top defensive ends in the nation. The 6-foot-3, 232-pound four-star pass rushing specialist issued a verbal commitment to Florida State almost a year ago but has been keeping his options open lately. New Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer recruited Fowler when Meyer was still at Florida and Fowler is now willing to look at the Buckeyes if Meyer makes contact.

"I would definitely have interest (in Ohio State), but that is only if Urban Meyer says he has interest in me," explained Fowler. "If Urban Meyer says that he has interest in me, then that's good. I haven't spoken with him yet but me and Urban Meyer we have a good history so we'll see what happens."

Fowler said that he developed a strong relationship with Meyer when he was at Florida and was close to committing before Meyer resigned.

"When he was at Florida, he was recruiting me real hard," he said. "I was leaning real hard to going to the Gators and I was actually going to commit until he left. We have a real good chemistry; he's a great coach and a great person in general. My Mom and my Dad really like him a lot and I know if we got a call that I would be interested."

Right now, Fowler is still working on deciding which official visits he wants to take. With no contact yet from Ohio State, he is only focusing on the schools that are showing the most interest.

"I don't have any official visits setup at this time," Fowler explained. "Florida State, Florida, LSU, Clemson, and USC (are possible visit destinations)."

On Clemson - "Coach (Marion) Hobby is a great coach and I could come in and play early so that is why I am looking at Clemson."

On Florida - "I like the coaches. The head coach (Will Muschamp) is a defensive coach and I'm looking at the depth chart as well. I think I could have a successful career there."

On Florida State - "Their defense really did good this year. Coach (Darin) Eliot I believe is in his second year so he did a real good job and I'm comfortable at Florida State."

On LSU - "They have a great defense and a great history."

USC - "Coach Lane Kiffin is one of the best coaches so that would be great to be coached by him."

Fowler is the No. 35 ranked prospect in the nation by Rivals.com.
