On Sept. 5, McClain committed a personal foul and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on one drive that eventually resulted in a Virginia Tech touchdown. McClain maintained his composure Saturday and continued building his case as a Butkus Award favorite.
McClain collected 10 tackles - 1.5 for loss - and recorded a quarterback hurry in Alabama's 40-14 victory over Florida International. The performance helped make McClain the top linebacker in the latest edition of the Rivals.com College Football Power Rankings, which measure the nation's top performers at each position.
In the only other change at the top of the power rankings, Oklahoma's Kevin Wilson regained his preseason position as the nation's No. 1 offensive coordinator. The Sooners gained 564 yards of total offense Saturday while playing without Heisman-winning quarterback Sam Bradford and star tight end Jermaine Gresham in a 64-0 rout of Idaho State. Wilson replaced Penn State's Galen Hall in the No. 1 position. Penn State leaned heavily on its defense Saturday in a 28-7 victory over Syracuse.
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, California running back Jahvid Best, Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant, BYU tight end Dennis Pitta, Oklahoma State offensive tackle Russell Okung, Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, Tennessee strong safety Eric Berry, Alabama punt returner Javier Arenas, Florida coach Urban Meyer and Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong remained atop their respective positions.
The ranking of a player and coach can fluctuate each week during the season depending on how he fared the previous week. The power rankings measure overall career performances as well as their most recent results.
