June 27, 2012Winston Shepard, the five-star small forward recruit and shining star of the incoming 2012 San Diego State recruiting class, was issued a citation for possession of marijuana late Monday evening, according to records provided by the San Diego State University Police Department.
The police bulletin states that Shepard (identified as "SHEPPARD, Winston, a non-SDSU student") was arrested, cited for possession of marijuana and released at 11:05 p.m. at Parking Lot C on Alvarado Rd., which is on the San Diego State campus. The incident was classified as an "Occupied Vehicle Check."
Aztecs head coach Steve Fisher wasn't immediately available for comment, and Shepard couldn't immediately be reached. However, a source close to Shepard told AztecSportsReport that the incoming freshman was the only one in the parking lot as campus police approached his car and discovered a small amount of marijuana after searching the vehicle. The source says that Shepard was not taken to a police station and never left the parking lot until he was released.
A phone call made to the SDSU police department seeking comment was not immediately returned.
The 6-foot-8 small forward from Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep is the cornerstone of a 2012 recruiting class that includes Rivals Top 150 center Skylar Spencer and three-star small forward Matt Shrigley, and is considered to be the best recruiting class in Aztecs history.
