November 4, 2009 San Diego State's women's basketball lost one starter from an NCAA tournament second-round team and broke into the "others" in the preseason national rankings. The Aztecs are No. 29 in the Associated Press poll and tied for No. 35 with Kansas State in the ESPN/USA Today poll. Interestingly, though, the team that SDSU defeated in the first round of the NCAA tournament, DePaul, which also lost only one starter, came out ahead of the Aztecs. DePaul had 121 points to rank 25th in the ESPN/USA Today poll to the 39 points SDSU received to be tied with Kansas State. The starter that DePaul lost, Natalie Williams, was far more important to DePaul's success than the starter SDSU lost, Jennifer Layton-Bailes. SDSU is able to replace Layton-Bailes with two bigger post players, Jessika Bradley (6-3) and Allison Duffy (6-2). Bradley is a Baylor transfer that sat out last year and Duffy returned to the lineup this year from last season's suspension. SDSU returns four starters: senior guard Jene Morris, honorable mention All-American; senior point guard Quenese Davis, the school's career assists leader; junior center Paris Johnson, All-MWC honors; and junior guard Cocco Davis. SDSU's women play an exhibition game against Point Loma Nazarene on Friday, Nov. 6 at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs open their regular season Nov. 13 at UC Irvine and play their home opener Nov. 17 against the University of San Diego. Contact Tom Shanahan at shanny4055@aol.com. |
