Offers start up for 2012 end
The Hokies extended a new offer for the 2012 class not too long ago. The scholarship was one of two offers for the prospect recently.
"Virginia Tech said they are offering me and then Duke offered me late last week," Brentwood (Tenn.) Brentwood Academy 2012 defensive end Woody Baron said. "I appreciate the offer, I'm just happy that I got the offer."
Baron of course has ties to the Hokies through his uncle Jim Baron, a former player, so he knows plenty about the school.
"I really appreciate the opportunity they bring to the table," he said. "I worked for it and they gave me the opportunity to show my talents.
"I've always been a fan of the Hokies. They play defense really well there and that has drawn me there."
At the moment, Tech clearly has an advantage.
"I really like Virginia Tech, I can see myself going there, and maybe I'm a little lean there."
The 6-foot-2, 250-pounder discussed his other scholarship from the Blue Devils.
"I really like Duke in the form of the academics they have," he said. "They have a growing football team and I appreciate that offer as well. I know they are in the same conference as Virginia Tech, but that's about all I know."
To date, Baron hasn't taken any visits since the summer. However, other schools including Ole Miss, Auburn, South Carolina and Miami are showing interest.
This past season Baron posted 50 tackles and 17 sacks while earning first team all-mid state and region. In addition, Baron was a finalist for the Mr. Football award in the state.
"I felt like I grew more than anything with my confidence," he said. "I'm hoping to roll that into next year."
